Licensed in another state?

Virginia Real Estate Reciprocity

F.A.Q.

Yes.  Applicants for a SALESPERSON license must (1) pass the State portion of the examination, (2) submit verification of completion of a 60 hour course called “Principles of Real Estate” and (3) submit letters of certification from other jurisdictions where licensed.  Also, in order to apply through reciprocity, the salesperson MUST hold a current salesperson license in another state.

Applicants for a BROKER license must (1) pass the State portion of the examination, (2) submit verification of experience (actively engaged as a salesperson or broker for 36 out of 48 months preceding application for licensure), (3) submit original transcripts or certified copies of transcripts from the educational institution where the applicant completed 180 classroom hours of broker pre-licensing courses substantially equivalent to Virginia’s real estate education requirements, and (4) submit letters of certification from other jurisdictions where licensed.  Also, in order to apply through reciprocity, the broker MUST hold a current broker license in another state.

We are here to help.  Advanced School of Real Estate offers a 16-hour Virginia License by Recirprocity Course. This livestream course is  organized in a live virtual meeting room (Zoom) where students and the instructor meet together to communicate via video conferencing.  The course follows a specified schedule and requires students and the instructor to be online at the same time.  Zoom is an easy-to use web conferencing tool that is accessible on MacOS, Windows, iOS and Android mobile devices.  Tuition:  $199

First, select your course (broker or salesperson) on the PSI Registration Page.  Click Sign In/Register to create an account.  Fill in your information.  For the reciprocal license, you will need to upload pdf of your current unexpired real estate license in your state.  Your application will be marked as pending. You will also receive an email to confirm that you submitted the application.  PSI has to process your application.  This may take some time. Upon approval, you will receive an email with a link to select your exam time and date.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Please contact the Real Estate Board at (804) 367-8526 for more information.

After you pass the Virginia portion of the PSI exam, PSI will send your information to the VA Real Estate Board at DPOR.
You need to fill out the License Application with a licensed Virginia broker.  The application for reciprocity is a part of the regular license application on the Board website.

You will need to include an original certification of your current active out-of-state license from your state.  You will need this to submit it along with your license application.  It needs to be dated within 45 days of your license application.  This is needed for your license application with DPOR.

Note:  Your out-of-state license certification should show that you originally got your license by taking a prelicense course of at least 60 hours (180 for brokers).  If the license certification does not show the 60 hours, the Board may require you to get an original certification from the out-of-state prelicense school. ginal or certified proof of the completion of 60 hours of real estate education (180 hours for brokers) similar to the education requirements in Virginia.  Many states (such as Maryland for example) include the proof of prelicense education on the license certification.  In that case, you don’t need anything else.  If your original state had less than 60 hours of pre-license education, you will need additional pre-license hours.
Waiting for your license to arrive.  It may take a few weeks to get your license since the fingerprinting process takes approximately three weeks.
